When everything seems to be going against you, remember the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it. ~ Henry Ford

Henry Ford (1863-1947)
I will build a car for the great multitude.

Ford Quadricycle, Henry Ford 1896

I decided to honor Henry Ford this week. I admire his was of thinking. He brings much inspiration by the example of his life and how he followed his dream. His quotes are simple, to the point and easy to understand. He is clearly one of the great minds at the turn of the century.

Morning with Henry Ford week:
Even a mistake may turn out to be the one thing necessary to a worthwhile achievement. ~ Henry Ford

Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal. ~ Henry Ford

Don't find fault, find a remedy. ~ Henry Ford

When everything seems to be going against you,
remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it. ~ Henry Ford

Here is a little of Henry Ford's history :

In 1891, Ford became an engineer with the Edison Illuminating Company in Detroit. This event signified a conscious decision on Ford's part to dedicate his life to industrial pursuits. His promotion to Chief Engineer in 1893 gave him enough time and money to devote attention to his personal experiments on internal combustion engines.

These experiments culminated in 1896 with the completion of his own self-propelled vehicle-the Quadricycle. The Quadricycle had four wire wheels that looked like heavy bicycle wheels, was steered with a tiller like a boat, and had only two forward speeds with no reverse.

After two unsuccessful attempts to establish a company to manufacture automobiles, the Ford Motor Company was incorporated in 1903 with Henry Ford as vice-president and chief engineer. He proclaimed, "I will build a car for the great multitude."

Although Ford was not the first to build a self-propelled vehicle with a gasoline engine, he was, however, one of several automotive pioneers who helped this country become a nation of motorists.

In October 1908, he did so, offering the Model T for $950. In the Model T's nineteen years of production, its price dipped as low as $280. Nearly 15,500,000 were sold in the United States alone. The Model T heralds the beginning of the Motor Age; the car evolved from luxury item for the well-to-do to essential transportation for the ordinary man.

Today, help someone "secretly" - do a kind thing for someone anonymously. ~ Zig Ziglar

I am honoring ZIG ZIGLAR this week :
Here are some of his quotes....

Morning with Zig Ziglar week :

People often say that motivation doesn’t last.
Well, neither does bathing - that’s why we recommend it daily.
~ Zig Ziglar

Today, help someone "secretly" - do a kind thing for someone anonymously.
~ Zig Ziglar

It is amazing what a smile will do, it's a little curve that sets things straight.
~ Zig Ziglar

Little men with little minds & little imaginations go thru life in little
ruts, smugly resisting changes jarring their little worlds.
~ Zig Ziglar

So inspired as always by ZIGGY, ...its so important to dream big...think big..do things that make your world big..give big....to have a BIG life !!!!

I was talking to a business colleague on the phone today from Chicago. I distribute a great product of his...We discussed mistakes and failures and how some blunders can be bigger than others...He said " When you get hit...the bigger the hit the bigger the loss"..but I said to him after a brief pause..."But keep in mind the lesson learned will be Bigger and it will be harder to forget in the bigger picture of success !!!!! When the water starts boiling it is foolish to turn off the heat. ~ Nelson Mandela

Morning with Nelson Mandela week :

If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head.
If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.
~ Nelson Mandela

We must use time wisely and forever realize that the time is always ripe to do right. ~ Nelson Mandela

When the water starts boiling it is foolish to turn off the heat.
~ Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela never turned off the heat...
He was a man who got things done, followed through, kept his word no matter the cost and never strayed from his beliefs . These are attributes many do not possess. He willingly put others first, sacrificing his own life for the good of others, the good of humanity, the good of his country...He served for years in prison for his beliefs and then many years later as president. This is a life to read about. This is a life lived to inspire everyone...

A kindred soulmate found at the Buddha Bar in ChinaTown SF

I did a Jack Kerouac tribute a few weeks ago on FB and Twitter honoring him by posting Morning with Jack Kerouac week : June 14th - 20th, 2009.

Its not on this blog because I started this blog a week later. If you go to FB or Twitter and scroll back you'll find it...

In regard to Jack Kerouac......

Recently I met a Merchant Marine Seaman at the Buddha Bar in Chinatown, SF. I went with my friend JayBird. It was an unusually sunny late afternoon setting, having been a glorious day in SF. This guy we met was a poet sitting next to us at the bar and quoted some of his own works along with much of Jack Kerouac's....He had all of his works memorized..nothing recorded....on paper,or word doc, nothing published...

We were mesmerized by this new found author and his passion as he quoted to us from his very own private library of writings only to be found in his memory on a shelf tucked neatly in his mind. We were honored that he was so inspired to share with us...The sun started to set outside and the clamour of the streets settled a little...We still listened without distraction as he spoke... quoting himself in the dim light of the Buddha Bar as the city outside made its noises into the newly found nightfall, nothing disturbed each word we held onto until he paused before the next..

I recently reunited with a dear friend Kevman on FB. We had both spent many hours over a decade ago reading, writing and going to bookstores together studying and honoring the great writers..especially Jack Kerouac and the beat generation. This is what brought writing about Jack Kerouac and this Seaman at the Buddha Bar this morning...Anyway, Kevman, would have loved this poet. I'm sure they would have sat for hours quoting Keroac, Ferlinghetti. Ginsberg or Burrough's to name a few over a pint of brew.

The seaman discussed liking Kerouac better than any writer ever & made the Lowell pilgrimage. He knew ALL of Kerouac's works, his history and life, absolutely everything.....amazing.....kindred spirit.....soulmate. It made all that I knew about Kerouac miniature, dimming in comparison, silencing me to hold on to his every word. He had given much thought to his poetic justice and I was enhanced gratefully; exhilarated realizing that we found a treasure as our paths crossed today.

Then the brawny sailor, husky and thick, tattoed and scared...none the less a profound and gentle poet...his hat tipped to one side, was off to the vast Pacific once again, he had been in the SF port for only a few days which was long enough to give his sea legs respite. The Pacific princess would be calling him to return home to ponder the things he loved and record the world he knew, wave after wave his very own thoughts, enlightening his solitary life and he would once again recite vigilantly into the night, while holding onto the deck rail, to his audience, the wind and the starry celestial dome....while all the others on the ship were below the deck soundly sleeping.

Man's goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished. ~ Nelson Mandela

These are the quotes chosen for today in honor of Nelson Mandela....

Morning with Nelson Mandela week : I am not a saint, unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying. ~ Nelson Mandela

Man's goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished. ~ Nelson Mandela

What is goodness anyway? Who is to judge what is good or bad and at what point does something or someone become good or bad? Who draws that line? Aren't we all capable of both intertwined with our daily struggles and contradictions as we seek to be true to ourselves? Is it not our individual discernment guided by our conscience or what we've learned or gathered through life's experience ? Do we really fit under one category. An Italian old priest Padre Ferme once said "Our soul is like brass, we need to polish it daily to see Christ's reflection in it" I may have been 17 years old when I first heard that but never ever forgot it and have shared it throughout my life many times.

The meaning of Guru is bringing one from darkness to light...enlightenment. Padre Ferme was one of the many Guru's in my life.

I have found though, " Those whose light shines brightly among others, because of their reflection of God's love can make others see brightly their own fault like any light and they may in turn want to diminish it....
It cannot be done...this light that shines brightly out to others, comes from within...sometimes achieved through trials and tribulations...or sacrifice ...Its a gift as light and love is from God....However you as an individual or congregation see God...as energy maybe, truth, simply one's conscience, a true devotion, service to others or a religion you find solace in... " People like Michael Jackson, Nelson Mandela and many other often misunderstood yet never allowing their light to be extinguished....

I've always been a free spirit...seeking light...my heart always sought to see the good in all mankind, everyone. It was especially a joy to see a sparkle in a soul that no one else could see, the lost cause type of person, the underdog...yet the glimpse of goodness could be so clear ....I think that was a gift from a higher place, and it always brought a silent secret smile to my face. I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. ~ Nelson Mandela

Back to Morning with Nelson Mandela week :

I got so caught up with MJ's memorial I didn't post Nelson Mandela's quotes for yesterday 7.7.2009 so here they are now..

The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling,
but in rising every time we fall. ~ nelson Mandela

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously
give other people permission to do the same. ~ Nelson Mandela

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. ~Nelson Mandela

There's nothing that can't be done if we raise our voice as one ~ Michael Jackson

The Memorial Service for Michael Jackson at the Staples Center in LA which was also a Celebration of his Life shined brilliantly as a extraordinary event which will be cherished by his family, friends and fans for a long time.....

They say the sky is the limit, And to me that is really true. ~ Michael Jackson

I'm alive and I'm here forever ~ Michael Jackson

What an incredible memorial...I would like to capture some precious moments here.

Many of his friends and family in this memorial showed such love...

Brooke Sheilds spoke of her friendship with him and how she said he was " The Little Prince"...and how they always laughed together...and how he was pure and saw the world through his heart...She said "Michael Jackson's laugh was the sweetest and purest one I've ever known."

Michael Jackson's favorite song was from Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times "Smile" and Jermaine Jackson sang it....in honor of his brother.

Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson, 2 of the best athletes both were inspired by him...and spoke in his honor. Magic said " Michael Jackson inspired me to be a better player."

Mariah Carey and Trey Lorenz sang "I'll Be There" and you could see how choked up she was..Stevie Wonder sang "I never dreamed you'd leave in Summer" and spoke of his love for Michael.

Martin Luther King III spoke about his father Martin Luther King Jr. My father said :

"In life one must discover what their calling is, and when they do, they must do their jobs so well that the living, the dead or the unborn can do no better." ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

He said my father constantly challenged us to become our best, by stating:

"If you cannot be a pine on the top of a hill, just be a shrub in the valley but be the best little shrub on the side of the road, be a bush if you cannot be a tree, if you cannot be the highway just be a trail, if you cannot be the sun just be a star; for it isn't by size that you win or fail you've got to be the best of what you are." He said "Michael Jackson was truly the best of what he was !!!...."

He also added that his father said that " In life if it falls ever your lot to be a street sweeper, you must sweep streets so well, in fact you must sweep streets like Beethoven composed music, sweep streets like Shakespeare wrote poetry, sweep streets like Rafael painted pictures, sweep streets so well that all the hopes of the heavens and the earth would have to pause and say ...'Here lived the great street sweeper that did his job well'..." He said "I believe on June 25th when Michael Jackson passed away the Heaven and Earth paused because he was the best and said "Here lived a great entertainer who did his job well ! "

Bernice King, Martin Luther King Jr.'s daughter spoke :

"My prayer is that no one and nothing; public or private; fact or fiction; true or rumored; will separate you from the love of God; because ultimately at the end of the day; it is only God's love that will anchor you, sustain you, and move you to a higher ground far above the noise of life, there you will find the peace, comfort and joy to move forward to advance Michael's legacy. It is apparent like our father & mother Martin Luther & Coretta King that, Michael's life was inspired by the love of God. Throughout the ages few are chosen from amongst us to use their gifts and talents to demonstrate God's love in an effort to bring the world together in true sister and brotherhood. Michael was such a one."

Bernice King went on to say, "He epitomized the words of our father that an individual hasn't started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns, to the broader concerns of humanity. Michael was always concerned with others with humanity. And I want the world to know that despite being embroiled in accusations and persecution as a humanitarian he thought it not robbery to concern himself with one of this world's other great humanitarians, our mother during her illness 3 months before her death. In October 2005 I was with my mother when he called her all the way from the Middle East. She couldn't speak because of her stroke she listened as he said to her that he had been praying on his knees everyday for her. He said she was America's true royalty to him. He wanted her to know if music was being played in her room because of its healing effect. My only wish is that he could have seen the glow on her face. If faces could smile as we know they do, that day, Michael Jackson made our mother's face smile in spite of her condition. What an unforgettable moment"

She also added...."Michael was such a thoughtful and selfless man full of the unconditional love of God and good works that touched and changed lives. He was indeed a shining light. Like our father Martin Luther King Jr, and in remembrance of Michael may we all be inspired to go and let our lives shine...RIP our brother Michael "

Sheila Jackson Lee from the House of Representatives, member of the US Congress and the Congressional Black Caucus, said on June 25th they stopped everything at the house and had a moment of silence for the wonderful legend and icon in honor of him when he died. She said " Michael never stopped giving...The king never stopped saying ...'I care about you'..." He has a great desire to go to Iraq and thank soldier's who sacrificed serving us and their country while visiting hospitals in Iraq. She elaborated on his extraordinary humanitarian service . She compared him to the Good Samaritan who cared and loved the world. She held up a plack in honor of him known as the Resolution 600 given to him for being an American Legend, a World Humanitarian and Musical Icon.

She ended saying... " Michael I salute you"

There was so much more, it just leaves me greatly moved from Usher singing "Gone Too Soon" to Jennifer Hudson singing "Will you Be There". Queen Latifah quoting the poet Dr. Maya Angelou and John Mayer's instrumental of " Human Nature".

Founder of Motown
Berry Gordy said " I think The King of Pop isn't big enough for Michael Jackson. I think he is simply the greatest entertainer that ever lived."

Paris, Michael Jackson's daughter who is 11 yrs. old said "Ever since I was born Daddy was the best father you could ever imagine...I just want to say I love you so much Daddy..."

Man in the Mirror ~ Michael Jackson 1958-2009 RIP

There will be a huge celebration of his life at the Memorial. Mariah Carey will be singing "I'll Be There". Stevie Wonder will be singing " I Never Dreamed I'd Leave You in Summer", Jennifer Hudson will be singing " Will You Be There. " Jermaine Jackson will sing "Smile", Lionel Richie will close with a star studded " We Are The World" and others will be there to name a few... Akon, John Mayer, and Chris Brown.

Michael Jackson will live on globally through his music for all generations and those yet to come....100's of millions will be watching the Forest Lawn Cemetery and the Memorial today in LA at the Staples Center and there will be tributes and services all over the world honoring him and his legacy.... Michael Jackson did make his comeback without the tour... RIP MJ ♥ ♥ ♥

I'm happy knowing I was part of his generation...It's true though...He will live forever....Camilla"

Today is the memorial in Los Angeles. My friend Vicki won 2 tickets to go. She won the tickets out of millions who tried. I hope she takes pictures and sends them to me and I will be talking to her later about it. In the time being it will be 9am PST on MJ's website as well. I will be watching there and taping CNN also.

It always seems impossible until its done. ~ Nelson Mandela

Morning with Nelson Mandela week :

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. ~ Nelson Mandela

If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy.
Then he becomes your partner. ~ Nelson Mandela

It always seems impossible until its done. ~ Nelson Mandela

The many tasks we encounter everyday to reach our visions, dreams or goals..they certainly do have a way of seeming steep as we look ahead contemplating... what needs to be done before we embark on them. During the task there is always blood, sweat and tears depending on the level of the task...and often sacrifice: yet upon completion we are relieved with a sense of achievement, accomplishment and worth. We then look back and say to ourselves...It looks so small now... For a visual, it is almost like looking to the mountain before we climb it and then after we reach its summit it is so much more achievable, you almost feel as if you want to do it again. It is real and not just a vision, dream or goal. I face this daily in my personal and business life...yet I always go forward no matter how big the task appears initially..a little coaching always helps from our friends and family yet when it comes down to it, we are in it on our own. The key is to "Go Forward" and not quit before or during...and if something can't be completed to retrieve, maybe even sleep on it, only to return the next day and simply try again...

" A goal cannot be achieved if we quit because of its steepness, one can retrieve for a better plan only to go forward hoping to reach completion..there is no great vision, dream or goal achieved without great obstacles and a steep incline. "
( by Camilla Vitale )

Nelson Mandela lived a great life with many obstacles and sacrificed much for what he believed in. He has always been a great inspiration to me influencing my life.

Nelson Mandela has accomplished many things, but his greatest influence may be for something he didn't do: run for a second term as South Africa's leader after his tern from 1994-1999. As the first President of a post-apartheid South Africa, he was, like George Washington, aware that everything he did would be a model for those who would follow. He once said, "I don't want to be an octogenarian President." What he really meant was that no man--not even one unfairly imprisoned for 27 years--should be above the law or the people. Currently he is still alive at 90 yrs. old living a quiet life with his family.

Nelson Mandela's two quotes below are so amazing to me. These are the quotes of a man who spent 27 years in prison for his beliefs on equality and freedom. He sacrificed his life and then he became the president always serving others. What incredible obstacles he surpassed and what an example of having the faith, love for his people, strength in his cause, and the mind and spirit to " Go Forward". His actions always spoke louder than words and his humanitarian efforts are to be admired by all, for always. I often think of Nelson Mandela when an obstacle stands before me or a mountain appears to be too steep...I often think of Nelson Mandela when I need to make a decision and desire to serve others as a true humanitarian.

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. ~ Nelson Mandela

In my country we go to prison first and then become President. ~ Nelson Mandela

After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. ~ Nelson Mandela

So here it is the beginning of another week...I think time was always fast but I have just started to notice it speeding up again...a week goes by like the blink of an eye...So now I think though, maybe time doesn't go faster as you get older but we begin to realize its speed as we slow down to take a look, then it seems faster...
"Each day, ponder and value time...it is life's most valuable asset..treat it as your greatest possession each and everyday..." ( by Camilla Vitale )

So for this week I'm choosing Nelson Mandela for the daily quotes. Absolutely one of our greatest masters to be inspired by and to learn from how he lived and used the time in his life.....
Nelson Mandela was born in Africa on July 18, 1918, in Mveso, a little village in the hills of the Transkei.

AN AFRICAN LEGEND

It was one of the great theatrical and emotional moments of contemporary history. At 4:14 pm, on the afternoon of February 11 1990, Nelson Mandela walked away from the Victor Verster detention centre, outside Cape Town, South Africa. The world’s best-known political prisoner was a free man at last, after 27 years in captivity.

He was a man who had the courage to do something about a problem. He was the type of man who was willing to go out of his way and make sacrifices in order to help out his fellow people. He wanted to be allowed to be who he was and he was willing, unlike some, to stand up for that. He lived during a time of segregation and discrimination and fought for equal rights for the black man.

So I dedicate this week to the heroic mission of Nelson Mandela posting his quotes.

Morning with Nelson Mandela week : July 5th-11th 2009

There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living. ~ Nelson Mandela

After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. ~ Nelson Mandela

A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination. ~ Nelson Mandela

Life's greatest happiness is to be convinced we are loved ~ Victor Hugo

I'm hoping everyone enjoyed the 4th of July holiday weekend. I didn't get a chance to post the last quotes on Morning with Victor Hugo week yesterday but here they are now...what an amazing writer...I will have to read Les Miserables again.

Morning with Victor Hugo week:

An invasion of armies can be resisted, but not an idea whose time has come. ~ Victor Hugo

Fame must have enemies, as light must have gnats. ~ Victor Hugo

Life's greatest happiness is to be convinced we are loved. ~ Victor Hugo

And here I am thinking of Michael Jackson again on the last quote....It's been barely a little more than a week...But all of his friends always said how loving he was...and how many people he made happy with his generosity and love giving people inspiration and dreams come true...And to think on how Neverland was built on the dream of love and his vision to be Peter Pan for always never growing up...

Al Malnik was a friend of Michael's and the Jackson family and was the godfather to Michael's son blanket and said " He built Neverland with love...Michael knew he had a God given talent he had to share with the world. Michael was filled with humility, sensitivity, reverence and respect for anyone and everyone. His love for his children equaled his love for his fans...Michael was a guy beyond amazing..."

His brother Jermaine Jackson said this week " Michael was my heart...Michael was a gift...Michael wanted good for everyone..."

Alicia Keys said " He is part of the fabric of our lives..."

Lou Ferigno said " Michael had a heart of gold..."

Florence LaRue, one of the lead singers of the Grammy winning 60's pop group called The 5th Dimension said " Michael was not only the greatest performer in the world but he was a very loving soul." She also said he was an inspiration to her and gave her group ideas. She went on to say " He brought a lot of love through his music. He wasn't selfish unlike so many entertainers."

The Executive producer and lead judge, Nigel Lythgoe from "So You think You Can Dance" said "Michael Jackson was the inspiration of this show and we all loved him...." there is also talk of them doing a Michael Jackson tribute with Paula Abdul doing the choreography....

Anyway..He certainly touched many lives and I still feel sad...

It is by the real that we exist; It is by the ideal that we live. ~ Victor Hugo

Here are my quotes today for Morning with Victor Hugo week :

Our acts make or mar us, we are the children of our own deeds.
~ Victor Hugo

The human soul has still greater need of the ideal than of the real.
It is by the real that we exist; it is by the ideal that we live.
~ Victor Hugo

I was told my entire life that I was too much of an idealist and had to be more realistic. It will never change...Trust me, I've tried by direction of the wise...I'm still that way....but this quote has made me think I was just living bigger and still do !!! I make the same mistakes again and again because of this idealism especially with people but I wouldn't have it any other way. Even through life's disappointments I'm happy within myself for believing in those and helping those when it turned out to be a mess and a bad choice...Basically I'm happy seeing the good in others even if they're bad, and giving people chances when I shouldn't...and helping those who are a lost cause...always been warned by my loved ones..but I continue the same trying...loving..hoping...giving....It simply satiates the thirst to give back and serve no matter the outcome...

"The outcome's interest should not be of importance while emmersed in the deed"

It is by suffering that human beings become angels. ~ Victor Hugo

Morning with Victor Hugo week :
It is by suffering that human beings become angels. ~ Victor Hugo
There are thoughts which are prayers. There are moments when, whatever the posture of the body, the soul is on its knees. ~ Victor Hugo

OK, I realize Victor Hugo's quotes are intense...but look at "Les Miserables" written in 1872...
He obviously was a very compassionate, and intensely passionate man...
I also believe that those times were more so...and not as hastily in a rush like these days. In the 1800's you had to connect, intermingle and interact with people directly. There was nothing else. today between faxing, texting, emailing, blogging, IMing, surfing the web..etc...People have their computers, cell phones and other gadget's...Social grace is being diminished and the interaction between people is less. There is so much time in a day. It can get lonely if your work is remotely on the Internet and it currently depends on social media and networking. We just simply have to make time like any era in history to balance our lives...in the real world...
Yet then our worlds are bigger, I have friends all over the world because of my business, and social networking. So it is the way of the future...Not like the 1800's ...candlelight and a quill pen and ink....

Victor Hugo or Vince Lombardi ?

I had a comment on this Victor Hugo quote:
"He who abandons the field is beaten." ~ Victor Hugo, ' Les Miserables' 1862
On Facebook Mark Meyers said:
"No, I believe that one was Vince Lombardi."

Thank you Mark for the input....I started to wonder and did my research ....
As it turns out it was definately written by Victor Hugo but I wonder which quote by Vince Lombardi that Mark thought was similar ?
Does anyone know ?
Vince Lombardi wrote many quotes to do with the field, battle, losing, not quitting and excellence. I can clearly see why Mark though this one was Vince's.
Anyway, I think I will tribute a week to him soon, thanks to Mark for the spotlight.
In the time being here are other quotes written by Vince Lombardi with a similar concept....

If you can accept losing, you can't win. Vince Lombardi

Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit. Vince Lombardi

Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser. Vince Lombardi

He who abandons the field is beaten. ~ Victor Hugo, ' Les Miserables' 1862

Here are the Victor Hugo posts from yesterday 7.1.2009
Morning with Victor Hugo week :
What a grand thing, to be loved! What a grander thing still, to love!
~ Victor Hugo

There is always more misery among the lower classes than there is humanity in the higher. ~Victor Hugo, 'Les Miserables,' 1862

He who abandons the field is beaten. ~Victor Hugo, ' Les Miserables' 1862
